Meet Giselle

NAME:
Giselle Martinez
AGE: 20 years old
WHAT DO YOU DO? I take photos of what catches my eye

WHERE DID YOU GROW UP?

I was raised in Bay Point, California until I was 7 years old and after that I moved to Antioch, California. Although I’ve been living in Antioch all of these years, I’ve gone back and forth to Bay Point. It’s where the majority of my family lives and it’s where I feel most at home.

WHERE DO YOU LIVE NOW?

I am currently located in Antioch, California! Antioch can be cool, it’s definitely filled with so many amazing creatives. I love the people I’ve met here and built bonds with. They are my homies, always. The best part is that everyone is so supportive of each other and their craft.

HOW DID THIS ALL START? WHAT EXACTLY SPARKED THAT WICK FOR YOU TO START CREATING?

I was 11 years old when my mom gifted me my first camera, it was a Canon power shot digital camera. I took it with me everywhere! I would save up all my money to be able to get the photos developed and if I needed a new SD card. Then, I had saved up to buy my second camera at the age of 15 which is currently the one I use, it’s a Nikon D3300. I've always thought about how beautiful it was to be able to capture a memory. I was able to envision what I see and feel and bring that to life. I love being able to look at a photo and not just enjoy it because of how good the photo is but because I can feel the emotion in it too. Since then I’ve just always enjoyed creating more!

WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO SHOOT? IS THERE ANYTHING YOU WOULD LIKE TO START SHOOTING?

When I first started shooting more frequently I used to always think “oh I feel like I shoot a little of everything from objects, landscape, portraits, etc.,” and I do. But over the years I’ve realized that I am big on taking portraits. So I’d definitely push myself to get out of that comfort zone and get more into shooting landscape. I mean if I see something though that catches my eye and if I can possibly create something, I won’t stop myself.

THIS BLOG IS FOCUSED AROUND YOUNG ARTISTS THAT WE TAKE INTEREST IN. AS YOU DEVELOP YOUR ARTISTIC EYE, WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM YOU IN THE FUTURE?

While I am a photographer and focus on primarily photos, I am also pursuing a role in creative directing. My best friend Veronica (@veronicadidthat) and I are working on an upcoming project called “Collective Unconscious Magazine.” Our magazine consists of uniquely themed photoshoots that capture the inner essence of the artist we work with.

The Savior Blog is an active attempt in creating a space in which we shape dialogue around visual culture, including all of its moving and evolving parts. Just like any Savior design that you may see, it has gone through many changes; from its conception to the execution this blog will do the same. By building a community of creatives we can tell stories from a global perspective of not only Savior as a brand but by giving recognition to those we align with who do the same.

This series of blog posts explores different interviews. These interviews are recognizing those outside of our local area that have a passion to create like us. These creatives range from photographers to other clothing brand owners, each with their own strengths and differences. With intentionality, we strive to bring each of these stories together in order to create something meaningful.
